Our Belated Gift to INANG BAYAN

The day after tomorrow is the first day of May. May is the month so special for many Filipinos. May is the celebration of many festivals throughout the country. May is also the month of flowers, commonly known as Flores de Mayo where the last day of the month is dedicated to Santacruzan, a sort of beauty pageant where beautiful and humble women are parading in the streets. It is basically the celebration in honor of Saint Helen and Constantine who are finding for the True Cross in Jerusalem.

Aside from these happy events of May, Filipinos also celebrate some serious and important activities. May 1 is Labor Day, honoring Filipino workers for their major contributions in the society. And every second Sunday of May is Mothers’ Day.

Filipinos are known for great respect toward their mothers. Mothers being the mga “Ilaw ng Tahanan” who takes care of her children. Mothers being the one who carry her children for nine months. And mothers like no other in the world. But being said the word “mother” is not just all about the physicality as a mother who always there for us, who we see everyday and who shows her deep love to his children. Filipinos who have great love to the country, with their nationalistic and patriotic love, know two mothers. One is their biological mother and the one is the imaginary mother.

The imaginary mother I am talking about is Inang Bayan (Mother Country). Inang Bayan is the land, the country, the trees, and the environment herself. Many Filipinos, throughout the history, have shown their love to Inang Bayan by sacrificing their lives and by continuously serving her. But deep within the land, the country and the environment, Inang Bayan is truly the people.

And we now have to say that another important event for this year is the National Elections. Elections in the country are being held every second Monday of May as the constitution says so. It is only just 14 days to elections and this is the time for us to exercise our right to vote. Our vote can change our country, our people and Inang Bayan.

Inang Bayan, being our mother, deserves to be celebrated also this coming May 12, the second Sunday of May. Our belated gift to her is the vote, is the right politicians that would serve us right, and that would be seated this coming May 13, the second Monday of May.

While Mothers’ Day is always only celebrated during the month of May, let be not our gift to Inang Bayan a late one. Because we can do and surely do that everyday is dedicated to Inang Bayan just when you act the right thing.
