Mayoral and House of Representative Candidates

In the upcoming elections, the candidates are now taking their own step to make themselves sell to the people. The Filipinos are going to vote for the National candidates which means they will elect 12 out of 33 Senators and 1 out of 123 Party-lists (representatives). But the elections for this year (any other election year) is all about the Local candidates.

The power of campaigning starts with the locality. The local candidates seem to be experiencing now power hunger, as if to say they could solve the true hunger of their constituents. In the localities, Mayors, Vice-mayors, House of Representatives and Councilor candidates are going to be in the hot seat.

Based on the research conducted by the author and the interns of the National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections, using the Commission on Elections’ database, there are approximately 3,826 mayoral candidates all over the Philippines. The biggest number of mayor to be in the contest in a municipality somewhere in Mindanao is 9 candidates. For the record, there are a number of municipalities in the Philippines where there is only one mayoral candidate. In fact in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), there are municipalities named after the Datus and the descendants of those Datus are lone candidates. Example is the municipalities of Datu Panglas and Datu Anggal Midtimbang.

Another municipality which interested the author is the Datu Blah T. Sinsuat in Maguindanao where all of the mayoral candidates (3) have surnames of Sinsuat. This means that they are relatives and these people are the ruling families.

For the House of Representatives, there are approximately 582 candidates for 231 legislative districts in the Philippines. Adding the figures from Zamboanga del Sur (5) and Zamboanga City (10), the biggest number of HR candidates is 15. This number is obtained by adding the first and second districts of the province, including the chartered city. In the National Capital Region (NCR), there are 90 candidates for House of Representatives. Quezon City has 14 candidates adding all from 6 districts.
