This is what many faithful in the waiting crowd in many parts of Manila proved when they became desperate on live updates and information on where the Pope was.

This unpopular feature/application of many cheap mobile phones in the Philippines such as the Cherry Mobile, MyPhone and Starmobile was became an instant help and companion of many Filipinos in Manila because of the lack of internet connection or 3G connection using their mobile data.

Smart and Globe, two of the largest telecommunication companies, cut their network signal and mobile data services for security purposes during the five-day visit from Jan. 15-19 of the highest leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis.

Many Filipinos who went to places where the Pope convoy would pass went crazy during the Papal visit but they had to experience what older generations would do – designating a meeting place in case of loss or problems.

According to a 2008 report on mobile television use in the Philippines, mobile television was still in limbo because of the lack of government’s policy and guidelines in the implementation of mobile television in the country. The National Telecommunications Company is the agency responsible for this policy.

There has been no study done yet to follow up the above report on television viewing using built-in television app in mobile phones in the country.

Other Filipinos in the waiting crowd also used their mobile radios for live updates. Others who were using mobile television would end up turning to radios because of statics and blurred images on their screens.

And at those times of need, Faithful would not put their earphones and let other people within the range of their phone volumes to listen also to the news updates.
